It would help if you would specify your OS ...

Make sure, very very sure, that the output is correct.  Do not reason
from your scripts (as in: it should be "4321\n1234\nuptime\nname\n").
Check it!

On unix, you could use "od", perhaps as "externalcmd | od -tx1"
