This is for historical reasons.  MRTG was originally a script that did
router input and output.  You can read about this on the web site.

It is possible to show just one line; but you still have to monitor two
OIDs.  You can read about this in the documentation, also available on
the web site.

You should also have a local copy of most (if not all) files on that
site.

If you're new, you may want to start with rrdtool instead.  This is the
back end for mrtg v3 (mrtg v3 not yet available AFAIK) and can be used
by writing your own front end scripts, or by selecting one of the other
front ends.  Replace mrtg with rrdtool in above URI.
