[mrtg] Preserving data when upgrading mrtg from gif to png ?

Upgrading from 2.5.3 using gifs to 2.8.8 using png for the graphs.   Is
there any way to preserve the existing data graphs that are in gif format
such as converting them to png or something similar?  Using png now with
2.8.8 but the monthly/yearly/etc are in gif format.
