That's correct, my mistake.  My example was ment to be

   Options[_]: blah1
   Options[$]: blah2
  [...]
   Options[ethernet.1]: something

as would be considered normal in a config file (global stuff first).

However the essential part of the discussion was about the [_] target and
from your answer I now know that it works as I expect.
