Make sure you are transfering the files in binary mode.  If not, CR/LFs
will be translated into CR only (or was it LF?).

Also: make sure your browser (if you use one) doesn't unzip the file
while leaving the .gz extension intact.  If this happens you're trying
to gunzip an unpacked tar file ...  Check with the "file" command.
