[mrtg] mrtg 2.8.8, gifs wanted, no pngs wanted

perhaps a stupid question, but i didn't manage to find the answer in the
documentation:

when i am using mrtg 2.8.8 and gd 1.6.3, png images are produced by
default (a long way to come to this point...). but there are still old
browsers around that won't display them. so what do I have to do in
order to produce gifs with mrtg 2.8.8 an gd 1.6.3?
