[mrtg] Counting smtp-in smtp-out sessions on non local computer

I saw a couple of weeks back a solution where mrtg did a shell
escape to get number of sent messages. Is it possible to achieve
the same with ucd-snmp-4.0.1+mrtg? If it is, what cfg file do I feed
with. Resources in form of examples/web-pages related to this would
be greatly appreciated

I know it's off topic but if  someone ever did a graph on it it most likely 
would have been with mrtg
