[mrtg] How to use MRTG to measure volume of data?

Hi all!

This might have been covered before so please bear with me.

I'm trying to use mrtg to measure the volume of data being transmitted
within certain period.  Does anyone have this experience?  If yes, how
should I config my parameters?

I will appreciate any help and thank you in advance.

PS:  The equipment is a Cisco 2501 and I'm using mrtg 2.8.8.
