you could possibly write a script to go through the logfile and delete any
number over a certain size, replacing it with a lower one.. replacing your
80 Mb number with something like 1k to smooth the average

That wouldn't fix it. The next time MRTG gets a value off the router it
will take that value, subtract the previous value and divide by the
time. The only solution I know of is to delete the log files and start
over.. but I'd rather not do that.

er...possibly I'm being dumb...can't you just stop the service while
you're recycling the power?
