Did you change the Maxbytes/Absmax setting after you started using
rrdtool (read: after rrd file creation)? mrtg-2.8 does not update the
maxbytes/absmax setting in the rrd file after creation. Do this manually
using "rrdtool tune" (cf. the rrdtune(1) manpage) or use mrtg-2.9.x. This
will prevent further spikes in your rrd files.
