you could monitor the device traffic indirectly by monitoring the switch
port that the MAC is plugged into and reversing ifInOctets and
ifOutOctets

This only works in a switched environment where the MAC entity is
directly connected to the switch and the switch has an IP and is capable
of responding to SNMP (most are)
