If you know a way to get numbers from a device or application, you can
feed those to MRTG.

There are some restrictions:
- mrtg must get two variables
- the format is rather strict; you can't play a lot with the layout of
  the graphs.
- positive integers only
- there are limits on the size of numbers
- rather resource intensive

If you're new, skip MRTG and focus directly on its successor.  It
addresses all of above issues.  Try out RRDtool by following this link:
