[mrtg] Averages Explained

Hi,

Just getting started using MRTG 2.8.12.  Could someone explain the time period
over which the averages shown below the graphs are computed?  For example, on
the Daily Graph, is the average for the current calendar day, the past 24 hour
period (288 five minute samples), or for the entire time period displayed in the
graph (which can vary, depending on how large you make the graph and other
settings)?

Would a fairly accurate measure of Bytes passed through an interface in a given
time period be had by multiplying the Average times the number of samples?
