technically speaking you could place the mrtg.cfg file anywhere you like.
as part of the command line to run mrtg, you are supposed to add the full
path to the mrtg.cfg file, so:
c:\perl c:\mrtg-2.8.12\run\mrtg c:\mrtg.cfg -- would work
c:\perl c:\mrtg-2.8.12\run\mrtg c:\mrtg-2.8.12\mrtg.cfg -- would work
c:\perl c:\mrtg-2.8.12\run\mrtg c:\mrtg\2.8.12\run\mrtg.cfg -- would also
work
c:\perl c:\mrtg-2.8.12\run\mrtg c:\some-other-dir\mrtg.cfg -- as well
the acutual path of mrtg.cfg is not important, although for keeping track of
things I would recommend keeping it in the \mrtg-2.x.x\run directory, as
follows with what most of us are doing.
hope this helps

Subject: [mrtg] Question with installation in NT
**Hi I have a very stupid question????????
**
**1.- I have 3 mrtg.cfg, and I don't know which one to edit.
**They are situated like this
**
**first one c:\
** mrtg.cfg
**Second c:\mrtg-2.8.12 <DIR>
** mrtg.cfg
**third c:\mrtg-2.8.12\run <DIR>
** mrtg.cfg
**
**I'm confuse because in one example said:
**
**######################################################################
**# Multi Router Traffic Grapher -- Example Configuration File
**######################################################################
**#
**# * copy this file to ../run and call it mrtg.cfg
**# * consider using ../run/cfgmaker to build your initial mrtg.cfg file
**#
**
**and in the installation manual said:
**
**Installing MRTG on Windows NT
**
** Use run\cfgmaker or manually configure your mrtg.cfg
**file. (Documentation on the structure of
** the file is in the file doc\config.txt and in
**doc\sample-mrtg.cfg.)
**
** To your mrtg.cfg file.
** Execute your mrtg with your mrtg.cfg file as argument.
**
** cd \mrtg-2.8.12
** perl mrtg mrtg.cfg (but here is calling the mrtg.cfg
**that is inside mrtg-2.8.12 <DIR>, and not inside RUN <DIR>)
**
**
**I'm conf the one that is inside run DIR....I hope its ok...????
**
**thanks
**
**
**
