[mrtg] GD problem for Unix (DG/UX)

Greetings;

I'm in the process of installing MRTG onto a Data General unix server. 
However, when I do the ./configure,  I get notified that I must install the 
GD libraries which support some type of font generation process. Can I work 
around this?  Do I need GD? (I think is is GD) Is MRTG designed for Linux?
