You can plot the number of BGP updates over a BGP-4 peering, using the
standard BGP4-MIB (RFC 1657). Here's how we do it. You can see the
results on http://www.switch.ch/lan/stat/ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169.html

LoadMIBs: /usr/local/share/snmp/mibs/BGP4-MIB.my

Target[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: bgpPeerInUpdates.212.1.192.169&bgpPeerOutUpdates.212.1.192.169:SecretCommunityString at swiCE1.switch.ch * 3600
MaxBytes[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: 1000000
Options[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: growright,nopercent
YLegend[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: Updates per Hour
ShortLegend[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: u/h
Legend1[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: Incoming BGP Updates per Hour
Legend2[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: Outgoing BGP Updates per Hour
Legend3[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: Max. 5 min. Incoming BGP Updates
Legend4[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: Max. 5 min. Outgoing BGP Updates
Title[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]: BGP updates swiCE1/ch.ten-155.net
PageTop[ce1-bgp-212.1.192.169]:

BGP updates swiCE1/ch.ten-155.net

Note that the unit (updates per hour) is highly counter-intuitive. I
think updates per five-minutes (MRTG's polling interval) would be much
better. Simply replace the "* 3600" with a "* 300" and adapt the
legends.

Regards,
