thanks to all, I pasted in the OID and it made no difference, so I pasted in
the whole config
and 'viola', suddenly it starts to work. I dunno what's going on but it's
fixed.

    Hi Andrew,
I am using the following config to monitor modem usage on my AS5300 box.
What is different between yours and mine is that, we are using different
OIDs. I suggest you to use the following config fragment for your as5300. It
will possibly solve your problem...

    Target[AS-modems]:
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.47.1.1.6.0&1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.47.1.1.6.0:public at AS
    MaxBytes[AS-modems]: 240
    Title[AS-modems]: Access Server Modem Usage
    Options[AS-modems]: gauge
    Legend1[AS-modems]: Modems in use
    Legend2[AS-modems]: Modems in use
    LegendI[AS-modems]: used:
    LegendO[AS-modems]: used:
    Ylegend[AS-modems]: Modems
    ShortLegend[AS-modems]: modems
    PageTop[AS-modems]:
Availability Analysis for Access Server
-
Modem Usage
