[mrtg] installing problem

I am installing MRTG in unix system 
but it has a problem 
i already finished installing it about my lab ,it was succesful but there
was problem when i tried it about remote one and gateway. 
after ./cfgmaker it doesn't work anymore. 
what is the problem?
as i know community is SNMP so i asked it to administer 
he told me it was just private . 
so i wonder if i try to install mrtg about gateway, what differ from nomal
router.. 
please give me the answer immediately
