[mrtg] Help setting up MRTG with SNMP on linux

I have spend all day on this to no avail...

I have installed the ucd-snmp package on RHL6.2. I have no idea how to
configure the conf file, so it is a default installation. I have searched
and searched for samples, but found nothing.

I can do this command:

snmpwalk 127.0.0.1 public

I tried using a sample mrtg.cfg file that looks like this:

WorkDir: /home/mrtg
Target[r1]: 1:public at 127.0.0.1
MaxBytes[r1]: 125000
Title[r1]: Traffic Analysis for 127.0.0.1
PageTop[r1]:
Stats for 127.0.0.1

and, I get this error:

SNMP Error:
Received SNMP response with error code
   error status: noSuchName
   index 1 (OID: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.1)
SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "127.0.0.1" [127.0.0.1].161
                   community: "public"
                  request ID: 1870261218
                 PDU bufsize: 8000 bytes
                     timeout: 2s
                     retries: 5
                     backoff: 1)
SNMPGET Problem for ifInOctets.1 ifOutOctets.1 sysUptime sysName ifDescr.1
on public at 127.0.0.1
SNMPGET: Failed to reach target: "1:public at 127.0.0.1". I tried multiple
times! public at 127.0.0.1

If anybody has some sample config files that would help me, that would be
great. The snmp.log file shows that mrtg is trying to connect, but mrtg
doesn't seem to be getting what it wants.

Thanks,

Wes
