William,

It seems that MRTG records the current value on the first line of the log
file. The next time the process runs, the new current value is compared
with the old value from the log file. The difference is then divided by the
interval (e.g. 5 mins) and recorded with the new current value in lines 2
and 1, respectively, of the log.

To manually check the values with snmpget, I would do this:
# /usr/bin/snmpget router.mydomain.ca public
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifInOctets.4

output looks like this:
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifInOctets.4 = 449320356

This will return the value for incoming octets on inteface 4 (In this case,
the ethernet port on an Ascend Pipeline router)

Do this at intervals and manually calculate results for a quick and dirty
check, then compare with MRTG's results. Remember this is octets, not bits.

I have no experience monitoring Cabletron equipment.

Regards,
Ron Lyman.
