[mrtg] MRTG & Sendmail

I am sure that there is some way to configure MRTG to gather stats for Sendmail....like amount of mail both in and out going through our mail server.  What I am not sure about is how to configure it.  I have been attempting to do this for several days now with no luck.  All I get is empty graphs.  Can someone lend a hand here......?????
