[mrtg] query

I'm trying to figure out how to do this, and I'm somewhat, uh,
stumped. I'm trying to track the amount of hits and data transfer on a
webserver, over the default 5 minutes interval that MRTG has.

The values collected are in the form of:

27579 <-- total hits since last restart
127039 <-- total kBytes transferred since last restart
a while
the core webserver

What I want to track is the amount of hits and bytes transferred
over each 5 minutes interval, but I'm unsure as to set MRTG's Options to
gauge, or absolute, or nothing at all. Knowing that at times there may
not be any hits at all, nor any bytes transferred (actually, that's not
100% true since the data collector has to hit the server to get the
statistics from it).

    Suggestions are welcome.
