[mrtg] monitoring web-site - can't use ICMP

I've searched the list archives and haven't come across anything to help
me.....

I'm trying to monitor availability and response time on a web-site.
I'd hoped to used mrtg-ping-probe, but ICMP isn't getting through to the
site although traceroute does - I suspect there is a L4 switch or similar in
the way that is messing things up.
Can anyone suggest how I might do this or point me to a sample config/tool
that will do the job?
