[mrtg] monitoring traffic in & out of Linux box

I hope this isn't too much of a dumb question...

MRTG seems to be used mostly to monitor traffic in & out of routers. I
would like to monitor only traffic coming in and out of a particular
computer which is running Linux. Is it as simple as getting snmpd
running on the Linux machine? I tried this a while ago and couldn't get
it to work. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks....
