You should not have any problem as long as you are using IOS version.12.xxx.
I have tried version11.xx and it doesn't work. I am currently monitoring
that using MRTG-2.9.2.

Assuming your use Cisco equipment with a recent IOS, you can monitor
the ATM PVC's just like anything else. The ifDescr will look something
like this (the aal5 layer is suitable for monitoring PVC's):

....
ATM4/0/0.12-aal5 layer
ATM4/0/0.13-aal5 layer
ATM4/0/0.14-aal5 layer
....
