I have been a member of this group for over 3 years, and have noticed the panic of new comers to the group. understandable! I thought putting up mrtg over 3 years ago would be easy, as there was a port to nt, which I am have an mcp in server and workstation. I also have coded c, vb and many other computer languages over my 30+ years with computers. yes... I found it a bit daunting, and spent a few weeks delving into the perl scripts to the point of how it was put together. HOWEVER... prior to mrtg, I had exposed myself to the three volume set on tcp/ip, and marshall rose's book on snmp and nms's. with that background, I was able to put up an mrtg site for our (previous) company on nt. where upon I learned and built perl scripts to dig data that would not normally be available via snmp. that included combining 8 t1's into a single graph from multiple access servers, and things as such. with my current employer... it's running on linux.
I don't recall submitting questions to this group, but have many times responded to questions and providing my scripts. the middle case (responding) has declined over the past half year due to the lack of initiative of the person(s) to seek the answer on their own in the docs provided, and also in that I actively participate in the cisco, and firewall news groups.
I accepted mrtg for what it is.... freeware that could provide a solution to my problems. with that I also accepted the fact that to avoid paying thousands of dollars a year for support, I would need to learn it and support it on my own. I am happy when a vendor provides me with an answer within 24 hours, and I'm paying big bucks for this support! with freeware and shareware, if I get an answer in 3 days..... WOW!
my philosophy is.. if a can't install the software and get it running.... don't buy it!
documentation issues..... yes.... but then we have how many folks of how many origins using mrtg?
solution.... I don't have an answer... it would be great if we could
1. find a single repository to dump everything.
2. have a person to 'normalize' the language attached or.
3. have internationalized sections.... volunteers? would most likely help.
btw ... sade's new album.... available november 14th
