MaxBytes should always be present.  It does some sanity checking.
If they are missing, I get an error ...  Make sure you don't dismiss
the output of MRTG!

Apart from this, you can "abuse" this value for your benefit.  Create
an extra config file, mostly similar to the one you are using at the
day time.  The only difference is MaxBytes which is set to a very low
number.  Use this other config file for the period where your backups
are running.  During this time, the numbers below the graph will show
very strange numbers.  These will look OK again when you run MRTG with
the normal config file.
