I have been using MRTG as a service by using the resource kit tool srvany.
It works fine, and dont even mention RunAsDaemon in my configs.

Just an idea & I've never tried it but can you set it up as a service and do
a scheduled stop & start of the service?  This should work with the
RunAsDaemon option.
