Hi,
You can use "interval: 2" for example in the cfg file to tell
MRTG that the polling window is now 2 mintues. Do accordingly in the
crontab entry, that would be similar to that "0,2,4,6,8,10, .....".
You can ignore the extra traffic. They are just UDP packets.
Very tiny traffic. But your monitoring machine could be more busy.
You can use "Forks: 4" option to alleviate this.
I have used this method to poll error and collision information.
The difference is that I poll it every 30 minutes, otherwise my
graph would be quite flat in a long time window.
My experience is based on MRTG 2.9.0 on Ultra 5 Solaris 2.6

Subject: [mrtg] Polling interval
I was wondering how reducing my polling interval may help benifit the
detection of hi-speed transfers. As I am monitoring switch traffic, 300MB
can slip through a port in under 30 seconds. However, averaged over 5
minutes this only shows as a peak of 60MB. Would a reduced polling interval
help detect these peaks better? From my understanding of how mrtg
calculates these such things, I'd think so but I want to make sure I'm not
just generating extra load and traffic.
