[mrtg] trouble finding Virtual Interface

I started getting errors like:
[root at netmon mrtg]# tail /var/log/mrtg
  error status: noSuchName

SNMPGET Problem for ifName.28 ifInOctets.28 ifName.28 ifOutOctets.28 on
11874 at 172.16.7.1

So, I looked to see where it came up with index 28:

[root at netmon mrtg]# grep Tar mrtg.cfg | grep Vi
Target[172.16.7.1_Vi1]: #Vi1:pub at 172.16.7.1

[root at netmon mrtg]# grep Vi mrtg.ok
11874 at 172.16.7.1        Descr   Virtual-Access1 30
11874 at 172.16.7.1        Name    Vi1     28

[root at netmon mrtg]# snmpwalk -R 172.16.7.1 pub ifDescr | grep Vi
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.30 = Virtual-Access1

[root at netmon mrtg]# snmpwalk -R 172.16.7.1 pub ifName | grep Vi
ifMIB.ifMIBObjects.ifXTable.ifXEntry.ifName.30 = Vi1

How often does mrtg 2.9.0pre31 check the ifName entry to see if it has got
it right?
