Why not just add ifInOctets and IfOutOctets and let it go at that? MRTG displays the percentage of utilization, if you have maxbytes set properly, and it will do the octet-> bits calculation if you use options: bits. If you want to see visually the utilization as a percent, use the unscaled: dwmy directive.
Since MRTG already displays the percent, as well as the "real" number, I'm kind of confused why people aer trying to force it to throw away all of the "real" data.
