I successfully implemented one of those. I didn't need to order
their software, a *very small* and **very** simple C-program is
enough to get it going. My program doesn't try to do recovery
or other fancy stuff, either it works right away or it doesn't.
The program that can be ordered might be useful for other projects
but I don't think (judging on the information on the website)
that it is useful for RRDtool/MRTG. We need the raw data.
I let RRDtool handle the missing sample if necessary.

Personally I think you should change "too" into "very". IMHO
it is (slightly) overpriced. [1]
Note about the documentation: If you decide to build your own
cable, and don't work with EIA-232 equipment on a daily basis,
you might not see that they are using the proper names for the
signal lines. Where the manual talks about RxD, they mean the
RxD line on the computer (this line is talking on the device).
Once you've figured this out, it should work within minutes
(including the programming of both the driver and RRDtool).

Alex
[1] Looking for another product, combining temperature, humidity,
barometric pressure, wind speed and direction. It does not need
to be high end (although it needs to be fairly accurate) so I do
not want to spend $x000.00 for it.
<RANT>it seems that these kind of products are high precision or
low accuracy or toy stuff. Why can't I find low precision, high
accuracy?</RANT>
