[mrtg] RRDTool and old log files

I am trying to upgrade from 2.8.6 to 2.9pre.  I see that the documentation says
that the mrtg will take care of converting my old log file from the log to the
RRD with the added directives.  I have almost a year of history but when I do
what the documentation says I only get 1 entry for the current run in the
rrd's.  Is the documentation ahead of implimentation or am I just missing a
step?
