This is, indeed, not the way to do it.  There's much more gcc than just
the binary called gcc.  You need to get the complete package and install
that.

These errors are related to your way of "installing" gcc.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed recently on this list.
You should be able to find the specifics in the archive.

IIRC you could make sure that the first occurance of "cc" in your
path is actually a (soft)link to gcc.
