[mrtg] rookie needs help setting up script

We presently monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic on our routers. I would like it if someone could help me set a script up that will monitor how many connections are active on the same routers. I have gaps in my knowledge, and would appreciate anyone who could give me some specific instruction. We are using Cisco 3640 routers.
