Nothing is fool proof.
With the 7206, the interface names will be consistent as long as you don't
change slots. but, if you move the traffic from one port to another, that
obviously won't work.
You could use IP address, but if you have to re-number then you have to go
through and change everything. And unnumbered interfaces don't work
terribly well...
You could use ifAlias, but then you need to make certain to update the
descriptions when you make changes. And you need to remember to remove the
description line from a sub-interface before you delete it, since it will
otherwise still be around even though it is not in the config.
IfIndex is, naturally, the lest useful method, since that can change at
whim.
I personally prefer ifName. When I move traffic I change it in MRTG. I
give the targets nice generic names that are associated with ifAlias instead
of ifName.
