I don't use (nor know) the script.  However, I can come up with some
possible causes:

-1-  Maybe one router does, and the other does not, count framing
     overhead
-2-  Rounding and other MRTG problems may cause (a bit of the) differences
-3-  MaxBytes may be set too low and thus samples are being discarded
-4-  Connectivity with one of the two routers is lost and MRTG uses the
     previous value

So yes: maxbytes may be the cause.
