[mrtg] Remote Linux/FreeBSD system monitoring... ucd-snmp vs. perl scrip ts in inetd

I have been preparing to set up MRTG to monitor remote machines. From my
research, I have found three popular techniques to gather information. 1)
cgi scripts under apache, 2) installing shell scripts on the remote machine
and configuring inetd to listen on ports, 3) using an snmp package such as
ucd-snmp.
The first option has already been ruled out in my mind. Is there anyone that
can share their experiences (likes/dislikes) of this type of config with me.
Thanks,
-Max
