I use both those options. Scripts to monitor CPU in percentages, and snmp
to monitor disk and network. I didn't use snmp to do PCU because SNMP only
reports average load over 1, 5 and 15 minute intervals. I wanted a percentage
of CPu usage over time, so I combined the 'sar' utility with a perl script and
fed the info to MRTG.

http://mrtg.yeehaw.net/ - follow the setup into for CPU load.
