[mrtg] Forking in Mrtg

Dear Mrtg Gurus,

Here is one point that I can't understand,
If I understood correctly, mrtg forks several instances for each device
specified in .cfg file. Is this correct ? Or process them in a
sequential manner ?

If its forking, why it gets sooner to complete the task if I run several
Mrtg's simulataneously with equal number of devices distributed among
them ?

I hope I could make the question clear,
