I have a Dell server class machine with dual processors. I was polling
about 1700 targets (interfaces) using rateup and it was working hard to keep
up. I was afraid to add anything to it. I finally tried the Forks: 4
option and I think it has made a dramatic difference. If you are running
linux I would recommend you try this. I have been working on converting to
rrd to ease the processor crunch because we want to extend MRTG monitoring
to the desktop on our whole campus (possibly 10,000 interfaces) and I knew
our current machine could not handle that. I may try adding more to the
current machine to see what it can do now that I am using Forks. I don't
know about the Daemon option but it sounds like more memory would help.
