[mrtg] cfgmaker problems - 2.9.17

I've been using MRTG version 2.7.2 for several years now on an old RedHat
4.2 box (2.0.36 kernel). It has worked flawlessly. I recently decided
it's time to retire this box, so I installed MRTG 2.9.17 on a new RedHat
7.0 box. MRTG works fine on the new box, but cfgmaker behaves very
strangely when I try to run it to retrieve config info from some Linux
router boxes that I have. Here's what I get:

[root at blah /]# /usr/bin/cfgmaker public at 172.16.50.1
--base: Get Device Info on public at 172.16.50.1:
SNMP Error:

SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "172.16.50.1" [172.16.50.1].161)

                 request ID: 1208540998
                PDU bufsize: 8000 bytes
                    timeout: 2s
                    retries: 5
                    backoff: 1)
 at /usr/bin/../lib/mrtg2/SNMP_util.pm line 450
SNMPGET Problem for sysDescr sysContact sysName sysLocation sysObjectID on

--base: Vendor Id:
--base: Populating confcache
--snpo: Skipping ifName scanning because public at 172.16.50.1: does not
seem to support it
--snpo: Skipping ifDescr scanning because public at 172.16.50.1: does not

...

and so on.

However, cfgmaker works fine when trying to build a config file for my
Cisco router, or my Portmasters. It only chokes on the linux routers. I
am currently running cmu snmpd on the linux boxes. I've also tried ucd
snmpd with the same results.

Normally, I would suspect that something was wrong with SNMP on the Linux
boxes, however, if I do an snmpwalk on the same machine, it works fine:

[root at blah /]# snmpwalk 172.16.50.1 public | more
system.sysDescr.0 = Linux lr.xpressweb.com 2.2.19 i586
system.sysObjectID.0 = OID: enterprises.1575.1.5
system.sysUpTime.0 = Timeticks: (467436546) 54 days, 2:26:05.46
system.sysContact.0 = Xpressweb Internet Services
system.sysName.0 = lr.xpressweb.com
system.sysLocation.0 = North Router
system.sysServices.0 = 72
system.sysORLastChange.0 = Timeticks: (0) 0:00:00.00
system.sysORTable.sysOREntry.sysORID.1 = OID: enterprises.1575.1.5.1.1
system.sysORTable.sysOREntry.sysORDescr.1 = LINUX agent
system.sysORTable.sysOREntry.sysORUpTime.1 = Timeticks: (467436548) 54
days, 2:26:05.48
interfaces.ifNumber.0 = 7
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.1 = 1
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.2 = 2
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.3 = 3
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.4 = 4
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.5 = 5
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.6 = 6
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifIndex.7 = 7
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.1 = lo
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.2 = eth0

...
and so on.

To make things even stranger, I can run the old mrtg 2.7.2 cfgmaker from
my old box, and it also is able to successfully retrieve info from the
Linux boxes:

oldblah:mrtg$ cfgmaker public at 172.16.50.1 | more
# Add a WorkDir: /some/path line to this file

######################################################################
# Description: Linux lr.xpressweb.com 2.2.19 i586
#     Contact: Xpressweb Internet Services
# System Name: lr.xpressweb.com
#    Location: North Router
#.....................................................................
########
######## This Interface is one of the following
######## - administratively not UP
######## - it is in test mode
######## - it is a softwareLoopback interface
######## - has a unrealistic speed setting
######## It is commented out for this reason.
########
#
# Target[localhost]: 1:public at 172.16.50.1
# MaxBytes[localhost]: 2500000
# Title[localhost]: lr.xpressweb.com (localhost): lo

...

and so on.

Anyway, I'm at a loss. Why will the new cfgmaker work on my Cisco and
Portmasters, but not on Linux boxes, while the old cfgmaker from 2.7.2
works on everything? What am I missing? Any clues would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks!
