As if this doesn't get said enough on the list....
The short answer - data is normalized. Your monitoring station has no way of knowing why a device took longer than x amount of time to respond. It just knows that it wants data every 300 seconds, and maybe it got some data at 315 seconds...not good enough, so it normalizes the data.

There's a lot of good information there, and you can tell the author how to make the page better or more clear...

Below you can find an example of log file that MRTG use.
Although I configure MRTG to query target 300sec interval, the sampling
time in some cases is not exactly 300 sec.
The question is, why does the sampling time change even though I
configure it as 300 sec???
