I might be all new to this aswell as many on this list.
The way I monitor my linux box is running a netstat in a perl script with grep command to take out what I need ie port 80 http connections, then graph the established and closing connections, same with port 25 smtp and port 21 ftp.
If you require, I can send you a perl script with cfg file, I modified it from the ping probe script !
