What is the OID you try to monitor?  Did you include the instance?

Did you provide two OIDs as per 
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/reference.html#item_Explicit_OIDs
?

Are there any errors displayed?  If no: do you use ">/dev/null 2>&1" or
similar ? If yes: what are they?

Did you use the gauge option?
