[mrtg] newbie question

Under what circumstances does mrtg need an additional mib (such as one
generated by perf2mib)?

If one knows the complete OID number and the OID returns an integer, is that
all that's needed to cause MRTG to graph it?  Is adding an additional mib
just a convenience so one can use oid names in the target definitions?
