[mrtg] problems importing data into rrd

I have bunch of historical data I would like t o import into rrd

When I attempt :
rrdtool update /spare/monscripts/rrd/sites.rrd 9862656:2.77777777

rrdtool informs me (correctly) that this update is from before the last 
update...How do I do disable this behaviour?  I am using perl to transform
the data....is there a perl module that may assist?
