Looks like I goofed a little on the regex.  Change it from:

> $response =~ /inlet.+C\/(\d+)F.+C\/(\d+)F/;

to:
$response =~ /inlet.+C\/(\d+)F.+C\/(\d+)F/s;

and it seems to work.  Unfortunately I can't see it because there is a proxy
server in the way that is stomping on my CGI scripts, and PNG files aren't
read very well with lynx...
