[mrtg] MRTG 2.9.10 Not Updating

I'm trying to use an external program to monitor a variable.  The program returns
the values in what I think is the correct format, but mrtg never updates any values
in the logfile other than the first (current) line.  What's really odd is that if I
set the "gauge" option, everything works as expected, producing a nice upwardly slanting
graph.  Any help would be appreciated.
