Actually (credit the authors), it is possible to do quite a lot with
MRTG without knowing anything at all about SNMP (except to know if there
is an SNMP agent running on the device you propose to monitor) or MIBS
(no exception).
If you can follow instructions, download the package and install it, then
run "cfgmaker" against one of your devices--about 90% of what you want to
know about a device will be located for you.
Only when you decide to extend both MRTG and yourself will details of
"SNMP" and "MIB" be necessary.
For most of us, I dare say, that won't occur until a very long time
after you have looked at the basic stuff--for many of us that was probably
at least ten or twelve minutes.
